Many chicken keepers might be interested to know that a natural and simple alternative to commercial layer feed is to make your very own non-gmo or organic homemade chicken feed. It’s truly the best chicken feed! Besides the fact that homemade chicken feed is pleasing to the eye with vibrant grains and veggies (versus compressed pellets), it’s also fairly easy to mix together, will last longer (since you’ll be using whole grains, not crushed), and is quite easy to increase and decrease supplements and minerals as you see fit. We started making our homemade chicken feed recently, and it really has made a complete and total difference in how we raise our chickens. 

Not only is the feed completely non-gmo and mostly organic, but I’m able to mix up a large batch all at one time. My favorite part? My feed actually sprouts when it gets wet, therefore, making sprouting and fermenting our feed all the better and easier to accomplish!

Is Homemade Chicken Feed Cheaper?

The quick answer to that is, well, no. In fact, depending on what you want to add to your chicken feed, it could be a lot more expensive. I can get a 50 lb. bag of non-gmo chicken feed from my farmer’s co-op for $16. I spend about $20 per 50 lbs to make my own homemade feed. If you can find an organic or non-gmo feed that you really love, and you’re concerned about the extra couple of bucks, then stick with it. But if you want to create your own feed with supplements and herbs, I’ll tell you, you won’t regret it. The best chick feed is the feed that works best for you!

Chicken Feed Vitamins, Minerals, and Protein

I learned how to make this feed from one of my favorite chicken keepers in the whole world—Harvey Ussery. He is one of the chicken kings here in Virginia (the other is Joel Salatin), and he even lives nearby! I’ve adapted it to our own needs and wants here, seeing as we free range most of the time. And I’ve also simplified it a bit more so that you have flexibility in your recipe as well.

While this recipe is super easy to throw together, there are a few things to consider when making your own feed, such as vitamins, minerals, and protein. Here are the things chickens need to have in their diet. They can get most of these things by simply free-ranging on pasture or from kitchen scraps, but for confined chooks, you’ll need to switch it up a bit and offer a pre-made mineral and vitamin supplement, like Nutri-Drench or Poultry Nutri Balancer.

Thiamine (B1)

Riboflavin (B2)

Vitamin B12

Folic Acid

Biotin

Pantothenic Acid

Choline

Niacin

Minerals Your Chickens Need

Calcium

Phosphorous

Magnesium

Manganese

Iron

Copper

Iodine

Zinc

Cobalt

Protein

15%-18% protein intake

A Note on Salt

Salt provides a great source of minerals and sodium chloride, and chickens do need salt in their diet, however, it should never exceed .5% of their diet.

Adding Herbs to Chicken Feed

Once you’ve chosen your options to put into your feed (and there are lots), you can start thinking about adding an herbal regime to your chicken’s daily ration. You can find an extensive list of chicken herbs and other things you can put into your chicken feed in my book The Homesteader’s Natural Chicken Keeping Handbook, or a few listed in my new book, The Homesteader’s Herbal Companion. Either way, it’s important to know how to administer herbs to your chickens.

Here is an extensive list on herbs for chickens.

Make sure you are using dried herbs if you are mixing them into feed, but more importantly, don’t mix herbs into large batches of feed. Also, it’s best not to use powdered herbs, as  you’ll lose them all during mixing.

Simply make an herbal mix, keep it in an air tight container, and then add a scoopful of herbs to the feed ration each day. Your herbs will stay fresher longer, and their efficacy much higher.

Here are some herbs and things to consider adding to your feed ration:

  • Calendula
  • Chamomile
  • Nasturtium
  • Mint (peppermint or spearmint)
  • Rosemary
  • Garlic
  • Thyme
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Chia Seeds
  • Flax Seeds
  • Sunflower Seeds

Time To Make the Best Chicken Feed

It’s time to make your chicken feed! I’ll tell you, choosing what things to put into the feed goes way beyond this recipe. I hope that you’ll consider purchasing my book when it comes out in Spring 2019. The options are endless, and it’s so fun to create your own feed!

You should be able to source all of the ingredients for the feed from your local farmer’s co-op. You may also be able to find it online, or bulk order through other locations like New Country Organics.

Basic Natural Chicken Feed Recipe

Based on 100 lbs of feed

Wheat (20 to 25 lbs)

Cracked Corn (20 to 25 lbs)

Peas, split or whole) (20 to 25 lbs)

Oats, optional (do not feed in excess of 15% as they can cause runny droppings)

Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (5 lbs)

Flax Seed (1 lb, do not exceed 10%)

Mineral premix, optional (.5 to 2 lbs, depending on pasture availability)

Free Choice:

Sea Kelp

Grit

Cultured Dry Yeast

Fish Meal (optional, not to exceed 5%)

Calcium Source (eggs shells, aragonite, or oyster shell)

*Slight flexibility has been given in the base portion of this recipe so that you can adjust according to your needs if you pasture range. Birds that are on pasture generally get more vitamins and nutrients than those in confinement.

Don’t forget, grit is especially necessary for chickens that aren’t on pasture or free-ranging. It helps the gizzard break up grains and feed! You can purchase grit, or even just grab a handful of sand near a creek bed to throw in with your chickens. Grit consists of small pebbles, sand, and other natural gritty substances from the earth.

For an added bonus with your feed, soak your feed for 24 hours before offering it to your flock. You’ll use less feed and your chickens will digest it so much more efficiently!

And that’s it!

      Im reading through your post again, and I wonder if you soak or ferment your feed and if so, the technicalities of it. We feed a large number of chickens and have to ferment in a bucket, but keeping all the ingredients (especially sunflowers) submerged is very challenging! Any suggestions?

        Hi Anna! I actually have a blog post coming out about this soon, if time allows.

        For this recipe, using this feed, I simply cover the feed with water and soak for 24 hours before offering it to the chickens. I do this in a 5-gallon bucket. Just put in as much feed as they need and cover with water, and then with a towel.

    I would prefer to avoid corn in or chickens’ diet. What would you recommend in place of the corn in your given recipe?

    How would I go about finding a local co-op? We have a Southern States and Tractor Supply where I live and a Farmer’s Exchange (they only sell grass seeds and then actually seeds for your garden) as well as a Farmers Service Center but they don’t offer seed in bulk. When you say wheat and oat and split peas, are those seeds as well?

      Hey Shanna! Yes! You could probably get 25 to 50 lb bags of those from your local southern states. Otherwise, you’d need to find a local livestock feed store that sells them. I’m sure you could ask the local Tractor Supply and they would know!

    How could I make this recipe gluten free? I have Celiac Disease and do react to gluten from chickens fed gluten containing grains. We’re going to raise our own layers in the spring and I’m exploring now to figure out what to feed them

But also, that there is wisdom in knowing when you should, and should not, have high capacity. Seasons of rest are essential. Maybe you’re a mom and littles and you have to put other things on the back burner. Being high capacity in a delicate season like that will likely burn you out of all the things. Maybe you’ve had health issues and need to lighten the load. But low capacity should never be because you lack self confidence or you’re lazy. 

This week, though, I want to talk about some real truth around capacity. Because the reality is that you can increase capacity, and you can decrease capacity, but you cannot SUSTAIN high capacity. It won’t work. This is where we see what we call “burn out”. 

A wise person will understand that in order to increase capacity higher, you must push yourself to beyond anywhere you have ever been in a season. Eventually, the capacity evens out, if you do it well, and you reach a point and begin to decrease that capacity before expanding again.

You can decrease capacity in order to rest, evaluate, heal, plan, organize, and test yourself.  Or, as in the seasons I mentioned above.

But never, can you ever, forever sustain a high capacity. 

You can have a bigger capacity than someone else. But having a larger capacity and living in “high capacity” are different. Most real leaders naturally have the gift and ability to manage a large capacity. They expand and decrease, and expand again—each time that expansion building out a larger foundation so that building increase happens more quickly each time.

But good leaders know that they can go go go (sometimes for months and years) at that rate, yet eventually they will have to lessen the load so they can recoup before they build up more capacity. The foundation remains, and is ready for them to expand again when they have rested.

Rest. Excel. Rest. Repeat. 
Less capacity. Higher capacity. Less capacity. Repeat. 

It’s all about balance, friends. You can do it. 💛

🔬 TESTING: For the first time, USDA/HHS/EPA will test processed foods for heavy metals. Good — now do glyphosate.

🏛️ FARM BILL: The Senate’s back, aiming to mark up “Farm Bill 2.0.” This is the big one. Watch it religiously.

🇺🇸 KNOW YOUR FARMER: Ten more companies adopted the “Product of USA” label, and Farm to School hit a record $20M for local food in schools.

🫐 RECALL: Frozen organic blueberries at Publix (8 states) tied to an E. coli outbreak — check for lot 60401.

The thread through all of it? The closer your food is to your own hands, the safer it is.

There is another heat advisory today, but this mor There is another heat advisory today, but this morning there was the coolest slight breeze on my back as I milked. Autumn is around the corner. In fact, it is already making its way here. The animals know it, the land knows it, nature itself knows it. Why? Because it’s inevitable. 

There are things in life that are simply laws of nature. The sun always rises in the morning and sets in the evening. The moon always has the same cycles. Many parts of the world have four seasons. Rain makes grass and crops grow. Bugs break down organic matter into soil. What goes up must come down. And so on.

There are laws of the Kingdom of God too. My oldest son and I were talking about this the other day. It’s the scriptures that say “if…then”. It’s “if you love Me, you’ll keep my commandments and obey My teachings”. It’s “honor your father and mother so that you may live well in the promised land”. It’s “observe the sabbath, come to Me you who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.” It is “if you truly love Me, the Father will love you, and I will manifest Myself to you.” 

If nature knows the laws of nature, how much more should we know the laws of the kingdom? How much more prepared would we be? How much more in sync with Yahweh would we be? How much more discerning would we be? How much more growth would we see? 

And how do we learn these things? Study the word. Don’t just read it. Study it. Find mentors that can teach you. Download the free Logos Bible app and start researching. And pray that the Holy Spirit would guide you in all things.

The seasons are shifting, friends. Not just physically. I feel it more than ever. And for what’s coming, we cannot forsake fellowship. We cannot just read a few verses and call it a day. We cannot just pray before bed and goto sleep. The Lord is calling for watchmen on the wall. He is calling for intimacy with Him in the secret place. There’s a reason it’s called the secret place. Commanders of armies don’t meet at Starbucks. 

Wait on the Lord. Meditate on scripture. Wash your family in the word. Speak life to them, and yourself. Because who knows but the Lord whether the “winter” will be long or not.

Meet burdock (Arctium lappa). For 3,000 years it has been one of the most respected roots in the field.

I did my continuing education assignments for natu I did my continuing education assignments for natural healthcare today while alone at home with my kids while they acted like bouncing squirrels. I stayed up until almost midnight last night putting the final edits on a @homesteadersofamerica podcast episode (coming out tonight or tomorrow!) I responded to emails and texts, paid bills and prayed while I was nursing the baby to sleep. I checked the garden for bugs and produce while getting ready for a milk delivery. And in a few weeks I’ll throw back in homeschooling a 7 and 4 year old (the almost 17 year old is well on his way to being done) on top of other things—housework, fellowship dinners, and all the things not listed.

So when you tell me that you’re busy. That you don’t have time to accomplish anything in your life. That you don’t have time to build relationships and community. Or that you’re stressed and exhausted and always tired. Please tell me that you have utilized your time to its fullest, too. Because as a no-nonsense kind of person with a high capacity, you’re not fooling me if you just have a low capacity to deal with life. 

Your dreams are on the other side of exhaustion. 
Your pay raise or extra income is on the other side of sleepless nights and long hours.
Your better parenting is on the other side of inconvenience.
Your deeper marriage is on the other side of yielding your time and will.
Your refined skills are on the other side of prioritizing your time better. 
Your deeper relationship with Yahweh is on the other side of laying everything else down and making Him first in the day.

The list could go on forever. But at the end of it you’ll come to the realization that every person in the world has the same 24 hours in the day. The difference? Some use those hours more wisely than others, understanding that some seasons require less, and some seasons require more. 

Others want to do the bare minimum, call it a day, and then complain about how mediocre or exhausting their life is.

Pick which one you want to be—and whichever you choose, you’ll be the steward of. It’s a pet peeve of mine—I hope you choose to go higher. I’m cheering for you.
